Summer is here..

Summer is here and I am frantically trying to finish all the pantos that

I have before the kids are out of school. Here are several that I recently

completed.

DSC03841

Dale is quite the prolific quilter. She can piece quite quickly and her

quilts always look fantastic. This quilt is for one of her lucky

grandsons.

DSC03842

“Ribbit” is the name of the panto. It is quite fun for a boy and I think

that he will totally love the frogs on the quilt.

DSC03843

Dale chose a grey polyester thread for the top. It does show up

nicely on the top.

DSC03844_2

The backing fabric looks like a batik but it is a cotton fabric. A blue

polyester thread was used for the backing.

SONY DSC

Dale’s quilt

Dale’s second quilt was also quite large and for another grandson.

DSC03835

She chose the same panto and thread color as well for the top.

DSC03837

The backing was purple and I used a purple polyester thread for the backing.

DSC03839

Here you can see the frogs on the back of the quilt. I think that these two

quilts would test my patience. Well done, Dale!

DSC03869_2

Arlene also brought me a quilt that will eventually migrate to her cottage.

DSC03871

Arlene is a great piecer and the quilt was very square and flat.

SONY DSC

Arlene’s cottage quilt

How can you not love the animals in this quilt? Arlene wanted a simple

design for the quilting so I chose “Happy Times.” It reminds me of water and

waves so it would look great at the cottage.

I used a cream polyester thread for the top and back.

DSC03867

I love pieced backings and what a great way to use up all the fabrics that we use

in making a quilt. Less scraps that way too.

I hope you are enjoying the nice weather and getting your projects finished up.

Playing Catch Up

School is quickly coming to an end and I am trying to play catch up with all

my customers’ quilts. Here are a few of the latest that I have completed.

DSC03887

Dorothy brought me 3 cute baby quilts. How can you not love this pattern?

Her daughter gave her this pattern for Christmas from Fabricland. Can you

believe that they have such cute patterns!

SONY DSC

swirls

She wanted some custom quilting and I couldn’t resist swirls in the blocks

beside the numbers.  They do stitch up fast because there is no marking involved.

DSC03885

This monkey is the cutest. I gave him some leaves to hang around in.

I used a cream polyester thread for the top and the backing.

DSC03887

Here’s another monkey that is fooling around too. On the outside border,

I stitched in more leaves as well.

The backing is a solid cream flannel which shows up the stitching beautifully.

DSC03881

Here is baby quilt #2- elephants.

SONY DSC

Elephant Quilt

I love the fabrics in this quilt.  I  followed the space between the

flowers on the top and bottom borders. It almost looks like cross

hatching but not quite. We can call it modern cross hatching.

DSC03879

In the block section, I quilted  diagonal lines, for interest. They were

fairly quick to stitch out as well. In the small inner border, I stitched

2 lines- 1/2″ apart and then added the squiggly lines later.

DSC03876

The backing of this quilt was a piece of yellow fleece. I must warn you to be

careful of how tight you roll this on the frame, because it stretches so much.

When I took this quilt off the frame, the grey background, behind the elephants

really puffed up. It bothered me so much, that I put it back on the frame and

quilted the elephants down, by going around the circles on the print.  And in

the background, I stippled the whole thing so that it  wouldn’t puff up either.

The stitching shows up beautifully on the back.

Quilt # 3-ducks.

DSC03862_2

I love the ducks in this quilt-especially the one in the middle.

I wanted to stitch a different design in this quilt so I changed up the design in the

pieced blocks.  I marked the middle of the block and stitched a diagonal line. It

makes the stitching look very modern.

DSC03864

In the yellow floral section, I stitched 2 diagonal lines instead of  1 line.

In the middle of the quilt, I stitched puddles and water for the ducks. I hope

the recipient doesn’t mind the fact that it is raining on her quilt. Ducks love

water so what better design than rain?

DSC03863

It does look very different from the stitching on the elephant quilt. In the small

grey border, I did gentle wavy lines.

SONY DSC

Back of the Duck Quilt

The backing is also yellow fleece. The stitching does show beautifully

on the backing.

I even managed to complete a block for my BOM Oceans quilt.

This month the block consists of Emperor Penguins.

DSC03929_2

I am so excited that I finished the block on time.  Now,  I am only

2 blocks behind. I may actually catch up. This is one reason why

I don’t like BOM programs. However, I do love the idea of

being able to work on a new block each month. It gives me

something to look forward to.

What are your thoughts about BOM’s?

DSC03928

Don’t you just love the baby penguin? Now, I have to go and make

some dolphins.

Have a great week.

Quilt Market-Part 2

DSC03757_2

Although Quilt Market has been over for almost a month now, I still

have several quilts to show you. I will try to fit the remainder of

the quilts in this post.

SONY DSC

Patti’s Runner

Patti Carey made this runner; she wanted alot of quilting and she really

likes Angela Walter’s style of quilting, so that is the look I went for.

Negative space usually freaks me out but I dove in on this one.

Looking back, I would quilt it differently now but every quilt

teaches you something and builds your confidence level.

DSC03757_2

In the blue sections, I quilted 2 different motifs. They are hard to see here

but one consists of tight swirls and the other was teardrops.  I used a blue

40 weight variegated So Fine thread for this section.

SONY DSC

negative space

In the white negative space, another Angela Walter’s design. Large

swirls that are surrounded by teardrops that are echoed.

SONY DSC

Between the white area and the blue runner, I quilted in matchsticks.

I love those things but they do take time to quilt in. And  a little

bit of a zig zag  was added for interest.

SONY DSC

back of the runner

The backing looks so cool too. I love the texture on the back.

SONY DSC

French Braid

This quilt looks so intricate in its piecing but you will be pleasantly

surprised to know that the French Braid seen here is actually made

up of 2 strips of fabric. Each braid is actually 2 strips of fabric, cut

apart and sewn  together with another strip of the same fabric. Isn’t that cool?

It makes a quilt come together even more quickly now and less time

consuming.

DSC03746_2

In the French Braids, I SID around all the color sections.

I used a monofilament thread for the ditch work so that I

didn’t have to keep changing thread colors and it almost

disappears in the fabric.

SONY DSC

border area

In the circles, in the outside border, I used a Judi Madsen

design but changed it up a bit. It looks like an orange peel but

more straight lines or modern looking.

SONY DSC

flames?

In the yellow area, in the border, I again followed

Angela Walters and stitched a squiggle on a diagonal. It

almost looks like flames to me.

SONY DSC

backing of the quilt

This is what the backing looks like. Pretty funky and fun

as well.

SONY DSC

Stonehenge

This is a very classy looking quilt. I wasn’t quite sure what to

do with it but feathers came to mind. I wanted to keep the stopping

and starting to a minimum so I decided to carry the feathers around

the blocks  on the diagonal.

DSC03681_2

Here is a close up of the inside of each square. I used a brown 40 weight

thread in the blue section. It show up nicely. I quilted 1/4″ inside the

square and then divided into fourths and then stitched the curved lines. There

were 52 of these squares so it took a while to complete.

DSC03682

Borders are one area that I struggle with but I think that I am improving

somewhat. In  this border, I continued the shape of the circles in the center

of the blocks and quilted in the same design. I think that it works well.

SONY DSC

Tile Quilt

I call this the Tile Quilt, although that is not its real or official name.

But when I looked at this quilt, that is what it reminded me of. So, I tried to

keep the quilting simple so that the piecing would be shown off.

DSC03672_2

In the large blocks, I quilted in 2 straight lines to show off the block itself

and in the middle square, I used an old pattern I have called Chantilly Lace by

Norma Sharp. I traced the design onto paper, laid it on the quilt, increased by

stitches per inch and quilted out the design.

SONY DSC

Chantilly Lace Design

In the larger blocks, I used the same design but it was changed up a little.

DSC03673

Here is the border of this quilt. Chantilly Lace was used again but this time as

a repeat in the border. I did take off the quilt and reload it onto the frame again

when 2 of the border were done. It makes it easier to stitch in than constantly

rolling the quilt.

SONY DSC

backing of the quilt

Here is what the backing looks like. You can see the brown thread showing

through but overall, not  bad at all.

Thanks for bearing with me in this long post. Have a great week.

A Library Quilt…

Joan bought this quilt kit, online, at Connecting Threads because

her daughter loves books and works in a library.

DSC03814

Isn’t it cool? The cream fabric has dates stamped all over it which

resembles the old fashioned way of taking books out of a library.

SONY DSC

books on the bookshelf

Joan wanted something swirly so we used the “Flirtatous” panto. It helps

give movement  to the quilt.

DSC03816_2

I used a cream polyester thread for the top and a dark brown

polyester thread for the top.

If you look closely you can see some of Alex’s favorite authors and

book titles too. I thought that it would be appropriate to stitch

some of them into the spines of the books.

DSC03819_2

The backing is made up of circular books and looks pretty funky.

DSC03818_2

I had alot of fun with this one.

I am continuing to show you some more of the quilts that I worked on

for Northcott last month.

Nortrhcott

This one was really bright when I received it. Patti mentioned using an

all over design (or panto) so I chose Quirky as my design. It is very

circular in design and I chose it to add some movement to the top

It has alot of straight lines and very bright colors so I wanted

something to soften it a little.

SONY DSC

border of the quilt

Here is a close up of the stitching on the top. I used a variegated

thread with lots of reds, oranges and yellows in it. If I remember

correctly, it had a cream backing. Yes, it was only a month ago but

alot has transpired within that time frame. There are still a few more

of the Northcott quilts to show but you will have to wait patiently

until next week.

Have a great week and happy quilting.
